In August of 1939, a few months after Hitler's book burnings across Nazi Germany, leaders of the farming communities in Kern County, California banned John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, and the book was burned in Bakersfield, the county seat. The book remained banned in the county until 1941. Between 1990 and 2004, Of Mice and Men ranked 6th in America on the list of frequently banned books.
